how gujrati in india are rich

I think pro-business mentality comes to Gujaratis from way long before even Europians or Mughals invaded India. One reason for that is its geographical presence,it is a state of a shape in peninsula over Arabian ocean which has largest coast in India and had shortest sea route to Arab countries, Africa and Europe. The trade between India and other mentioned had been in existence over a long long time, until Mughal countries started war in arabian sea against Europians. Thats why they had to find a new way to India (It is also an unverified story of Vasco d' gama meeting a Gujarati trader 'kanha' in Africa and followed him to India.) Back in time there might be huge population of traders who did business with other countries through arabian sea from Gujarat that have created huge business minded population and grew sense of trading. (Don't believe me? Notice the power of a Gujarati to bargain price in the market next time.)

Now according to India's caste based system, where a traders' son takes care of his father's business, this trades grew and divided.

Now assume Mahatma Gandhi went to study and practice law in Africa around 1890s where there were already huge population of Gujaratis in South Africa and was a popular destination.

Gujaratis spend sparingly, they don't believe in flaunting their wealth (Yes, you won't even know your Gujju neighbor might be a billionaire). The reason is Gujarat is very hot & dry land, most of the land is salty and barren, it has witnessed many droughts in past, so key is in saving your resources that they know very well.

They are very social, you'll mostly find a gujju guy funny and talkative that is again a key they know lot of people.. lot of contacts (Yes!! Narendra Modi might be in their 6 degrees of separation) which helps them grow their business.
First of all, it is not a myth. Gujaratis have high business sense, though they equally suck at studies.

I am a Gujarati, and as it so happens, I was the only one who cared about studies in my whole town ! What were the others thinking ? They had no plans ! Because for some reason they knew that they would survive, or may live even happier.

You see, unlike other states, where students typically keep studying the hopes of getting into a good college and then a ideal job, students here live a happy life. They roam around here and there, hang out with friends, thus attaining the so called practical values of life. Talk you Gujarati and you will see the difference.

A Gujarati would not invest 10 lakhs on a engineering college to a get a 3 lakh job. He would instead take a Visa, go to the US, earn something and come back ! Really, it is that simple. People here simply have more awareness and more  common sense than the rest of India who are basically busy running in a rat race until college.

Even a dumb person knows the words share market and stock prices. People play poker/cards. They like taking their chances.

Go to IIMA and surprisingly, you will hardly find a Gujarati student. Now go to Dalal Street, you can't possibly NOT find a Gujarati. The point being, we value practical lessons more than theoretical study.

The Economy is also good, because Gujaratis spend a lot, and partly due to the cash inflows from relatives abroad. Thus lets say even if you want to open a simple soda shop, you can expect some customers. People are willing to spend.

They also save a lot. Transport is cheap. Other facilities are all nearby. There is a healthy competition, hence prices are in check. I met this guy on train, he shifted from Delhi to Kheda, Gujarat. We start discussing things and he says, "Yaar yaha koi kharcha he nai hai, sara paisa jeb me!"

Also, we don't have our entire businesses concentrated in a single metro city. Instead, we have 4 major cities - Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara. So I can go to the nearest one and carry out business without much competition.

Last but not the least, we have been in business for centuries and many families have big networks. This matters a lot in business. A recommendation and you are in.
Now in order to become entrepreneurial – we gotta work in a team – this team-building capability is where we fail badly – very badly indeed – because everyone will give their ‘2 cents’ and the idea eventually fails to take shape!

So eventually and grudgingly too – we take up jobs – giving ourselves a kind of ‘condolence self counselling’ – that we are mighty huge personalities but nevertheless we are ‘very happy with very little’ (alpa santusht)  – and live the rest of our lives nurturing that illusion about ourselves!
